Automatic Swing Gate

For most landed houses with swing gates access, owners normally will install an automatic remote control automation system, however many owners rely on the installer to fix without know much of the technical specification of the system. Thus I wish to share on some key technical specifications of automatic gate system.


How automatic gate system works?

An overview of an automatic gate system consists of the following:

1. the motorized arm for closing or opening the gate (underground or surface mounted)
2. the control panel consist of a low voltage transformer, control board, remote receiver, all fixed into a weather proof casing
3. pillar light (normally mounted on the gate pillars
4. switches 
5. remote controller

Most motors (item 1) are operated in low voltage to ensure safety (24VDC or less). 

However the following need to be considered before choosing the right motor / arm:

1. size of the gate (normally the width of the gate)
2. weight of the gate

Please check the specification of the motor for selection.

Important note:

1. It is always recommended to ensure the gate leaves are fitted with heavy duty ball bearing  hinges and properly fitted in level position at all degree of opening to ensure smooth operation and long lasting of the automatic gate system.

2. if there is water ponding issue at the gate, is always advised to use surface mounted arm type motor.

3. For underground floor mounted type, workmanship is very important, selection of a "technical know how" installer will reduce chances of system breakdown.

My advice is always go for surface mounted type. Surface mounted type also has the advantage of lower exposure to lightning surge which is very common root cause for breakdown.

As for the control panel installation, installer must know the techinic to ensure the installation is weather proof as well as "insects-proof".

How Security Alarm Works?

A Basic Home Security System consist of the key components as follows:

1. Detectors or Sensors

2. Control Panel

3. Key Pad

4. Strobe Lights and Siren

Home Security is SIMPLE!

Security alarm work in a "close circuit" monitoring mode, whenever any of the detectors / sensors "opened", the circuit and control panel will trigger the alarm and send notification signal to the Remote Monitoring Center.

What are the basic specification for a home security alarm?

1. minimum 4 individual programmable zones (depending how many access points that need to be monitored, can be up to more than hundred zones if for one block of office)

2. 500 storage of event logs - recording all the status of security progressively, for instance when the alarm being Armed, disarmed, which zone trigger, which access PIN, with the date and time)

3. Compatible with Center Monitoring System integration

4. Built in remote control via telephone dial in

5. reporting alarm thru phone by tone signal

6. backup battery able to sustain for 24 hours power failure

7. EPROM memory can retain memory during total power failure

What are the value adding feature available for home security alarm?

1. built in or additional module capable for internet access control and monitoring

2. user friendly key pad, owner do not need to refer to user manual for common usage

3. key pad able to display event logs, not relying on service provider to download from control panel

4. GSM system expandable module, allowing sms alert and remote control

6. can integrate with auto gate system

Which alarm system to choose?

1. The system provider 

• has good track record and past project reference
• good record on after sales service, technical support, reliable and accountable
• minimum one year product warranty against manufacturer's and installation defects
• has been many years in the market but not just a hit and run kind of brand or installer
• technically know how, not cutting corners on the quality of material used (cable, termination etc)

2. The Brand and Model (Security Alarm System)

• Upgrade-able security system - can add additional value adding module
• meet all the above basic specifications

What other important thing to be taken note?

• Yearly / half yearly Maintenance is recommended
• The sensors, the back up battery, the siren and strobe lights, the communication need to be checked to make sure it is working.
